Matte Lips Sink Ships

So you may have noticed that liquid lipsticks have been having a bit of a moment lately. From Rimmel to Anastasia Beverly Hills, everyone and their mother has been jumping on the bandwagon.
In case you’re not familiar, a liquid lipstick is basically a lipstick, usually matte, in liquid form so it goes on like a gloss but is more opaque and has the finish of a lipstick. If you follow me on Twitter or Instagram you’ll know that I have a mild ( read: severe) obsession with the offering from Bourjois- the Rouge Ediition Velvet lipsticks. I have 4 shades, Hot Pepper which is a bright red leaning towards the orangey side, Pink Pong which is a bold fuchsia and just the most untouchable pink lip product IMHO, Nude-ist! which is a perfect Kylie Jenner, neutral and Happy Nude Year (brilliant) which is a pinky peach nude.

I have nothing negative to say about this product, it’s a dream come true. They are amazingly pigmented, they go on creamy and set down to matte but aren’t hugely drying on the lips and are so comfortable to wear but most of all they last FOREVER! For someone who is a big fan of a bold lip this is SO important to me. I hate having to constantly top up or keep checking a mirror to make sure it hasn’t faded, leaving you with that gross ring of colour around the edge of your lips (ugh!) You can eat, drink, be merry and these will hardly budge, you don’t have to think about it. I usually will top them up once throughout the night and that’s it AND on New Years Eve I wore Pink Pong, fell asleep in my makeup at like 6:00am (GAHH I know, sorry Caroline Hirons!) and when I woke up my lips were still perfect! It comes off easily when you want it to with a bit of makeup remover.

So these are clearly the holy grail but I’m always on the look out for other options. A friend suggested the MUA Luxe Velvet Lip Lacquer which excited me because they’re only £3! I bought the shade Reckless and I LOVE the colour (a deep, darkish red) but I’m sorry to say it just didn’t last. As soon as you have a sip of a drink the formula starts to break down where the liquid had touched it so you can image what happens when you eat. I’ve worn mine about 3 or 4 times and the amount I had to top up it just didn’t seem worth it, I was constantly paranoid that the colour had gone weird and patchy. The formula is similar to the Bourjois ones but dries quicker when applying and then after a while almost feels kind of crumbly on the lips. Great if you’re only wearing it for an hour or two with no food or drink but just not practical for me sadly. Major bummer.

The next one I tried was the Rimmel Apocalips Matte Lip Velvet in Orange-ology (an orange toned red). Now from the name I expected these to be much the same as the others in formula. They are not. The consistency is much thinner so you need to put on a lot to get an opaque finish but even then you struggle. It doesn’t dry or set down at all so the more you put on you’re kind of taking the underneath layers off. Also the doe foot applicator has a little dent or well in it where all the product gathers but then doesn’t transfer onto you lip, it kind of just sits in there. Most importantly it is not matte, the finish was shiny and felt almost oily on the lips! It doesn’t dry down so you constantly worried that its going to slip right off but it’s one redeeming feature is that it does kind of stain the lips so when the gloss wears off you are left with a somewhat even wash of colour. But no. Not happy at all.

The final product is one I’ve only tried once but I think is going to be a good one. It’s the BEAUTIFUL Lime Crime Velvetine in Pansy (I can’t link it at the mo. because their site is down). This colour is so gorgeous and unique I just love it and I think it would work on nearly all skin tones. While applying I was aware that the formula felt more watery than the Bourjois or MUA versions. The colour is super pigmented though so you only need a couple of layers. Anyway because of the thin consistency I was really paranoid that the colour was coming off every time I took a sip of liquid but I wasn’t really in a situation where I could constantly check. I think I re-applied once to be sure and when I got home a few hours later it was still all good. I definitely need another test drive to be sure but at the moment I’d day they sit just under the Bourjois ones in terms of lasting, which is fine by me because those things are bionic! Oh, and it smells like cake! Anyway I adore the colour so I hope it isn’t as disappointing as the other offers and I still want to try all of the other offerings out there!

A Touch of the MACabre

BOO!

Hi boys and ghouls and welcome to the HALLOWEEN SPECIAL! OOOooooooOOOOooooHHHHhhhh!!

Last weekend I went to a Halloween party. I wanted to go as a kind of zombie/ ghost/ corpse bride type thing because I have a bridesmaids dress that is essentially a wedding dress so was gonna team that with some spooky ass make up and a tiara, natch. Then I got the fear that other people at the party wouldn’t be as dressed up as me and I’d look silly so I removed the wedding dress from the equation and wore all black instead. Genius.
Two of my friends were going as characters from the film The Craft so I kind of went in with them but really I just looked like a massive goth, which is fine by me ’cause I loves me a goth.

Here we are in all our 90’s, Wiccan glory:

-Watch out for those weirdos girls

-We are the weirdos, Mr.

Quite good that, innit?! For the make up I used mainly MAC stuff so thought I’d talk you through what I used and how I did it.

Base:

  • Ok, so foundation wise I wanted to look a bit paler that normal so I used my friend’s foundation, which was really weird as it was really thick and matte and kind of grey in colour so felt a bit like rubbing cement into your face (fun!) I’d never heard of the brand before and I can’t remember the name so thats mega helpful but I wouldn’t recommend it anyway.
  • I finished the base with a dusting of loose powder and yadda yadda yadda.
  • I didn’t use blusher because I was trying to look ghostly but I did whack some bronzer under my cheekbones in an attempt to make myself look more gaunt. I used MAC Studio Tech in NW43 and a Real Techniques brush.
  • Filled in ma’ brows with a MAC Eyebrow Crayon in Stud but was a bit more heavy handed than usual because scary people have big, dark eyebrows… obv.

Eyes:

  • For an eyeshadow base I used Too Faced Shadow Insurance.
  • Then I smudged MAC Black Track all over the lower part of the lid with my finger and blended it up and out with a fluffy eye shadow brush.
  • This is where the magic happens! I patted on MAC Pigment in Blue Brown all over the lower part of the lid and into the crease with a flat shader brush and then blended up and out with the same fluffy brush from the previous step. This pigment is the stuff dreams are made of! On its own it comes out as a subtle shimmery brown with blue and green shimmer running through it but layered over Black Track it creates this amazing, Blue Bottle Fly, shimmery green colour thats almost holographic. And well scary, obviously… I LURVE it!
  • I then blended in MAC eyeshadow in Black Tied around the edges to soften them (same brush) which is a black eyeshadow with silver glitter running through it.
  • I use MAC eyeshadow in Vex to highlight my brow bone with a short, fat highlighter brush (I made that term up) and blended Black Tied into it with the same fluffy brush. Vex is a kind of off white/ grey shadow with a green and pink pearl finish and is also kind of holographic. I should’ve done swatches but I ‘aint that organised…
  • THE KEY WITH EYESHADOW IS TO BLEND YOUR ASS OFF!
  • I roughly smudged some Rimmel Scandal-Eyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in Black over my top and bottom lash line, then blended some Blue Brown pigment under the lower lashes too.
  • I used L’Oréal Voluminous Mascara on top and bottom lashes.

Lips:

  • I used MAC Prep and Prime lip and then lined and filled my lips in with a Dolce & Gabbana Precision Lip Liner in 4, which is a kind of plummy shade.
  • I then used MAC Sheen Supreme Lipstick in Good To Be Bad (amazing name!)

Here endeth the lesson.

To be honest, as I’m a bit of a goth at heart I would probably wear a slightly more toned down version of this look on a night out. With my own foundation and a whisper of blusher I’d look less dead so, you know…

Happy Halloween Bitches.

The Lipstick Lowdown

Hey Gang,

As some of you will already know, I got a lorra lorra love for lipsticks so I thought I would list my ultimate faves. Below are a selection of the ones I use most. I tried my best to swatch them for you but the lighting in here sucks so they may look a tad different to how they actually come out. Also it depends on the person’s skin tone and blah blah.

17 Lasting Fix Lipstick in Showbiz
This stuff is the freaking bomb! It is my go to red, it’s the first one I started wearing on the reg and it’s nearly worn down to a nub which makes me sad and scared. It is such a perfect shade, it’s blue toned but goes with pretty much any skin tone. A friend of mine also wears it and she it white as cream with blue eyes and it looks sick on her too so there you go. Plus it lasts for aaaaaaaaaages, I hardly ever have to re apply it. It’s matte and is a teeeeeeny bit drying so balm up before hand but basically for me it can do no wrong. I wear it day and night but it’s pretty bold so if you’re not used to wearing red lipstick keep it for after dark.

Miss Sporty Perfect Colour Lipstick in Watch Out!
This is a great day to night product. It comes out fairly sheer so you can build up the colour or keep it subtle. More of an orangey red and smells like watermelon bubblegum. Also being Miss Sporty it was really cheap, score! As it’s not matte it doesn’t dry your lips put at all but is also not as long lasting.

MAC Matte Lipstick in So Chaud
Goes on super creamy but is incredibly matte. Also an orange toned red, very bold, very awesome. V. simillar to Watch Out in colour but bolder (and obviously not sheer). High impact colour, pretty long lasting. Look s great on my olive skin as well as pale skin and I think it would look amazing on dark skin. LOVE IT.

Revlon Creme Super Lustrous Lipstick in Fire & Ice
Lovely and creamy (duh), lasts beautifully. Another red but has more of a pink tone, even though it’s a bold shade the pink it it softens it a bit. Bright and fun and pretty but still packs a punch.

Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in In Vogue
Another one I’ve had for ages that I use a lot. A bright, blue toned fuchsia with a creamy texture. Looks great on olive skin (even better when I have a tan) think it might wash out a paler face though. I see this as, like, my party colour so I only really wear it at night. Goes great with raves.

Kate Moss for Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in 701
Kind of disappointed that this doesn’t have a cool name. Anyway its a much deeper, dark red. Kind of a wine colour, blue toned. Comes out quite dark on me but a tad lighter on paler skin I think. Great for Autumn/ Winter. Even though it is also a Rimmel Lasting Finish this one is more matte (as opposed to In Vogue which is creamy).

Revlon Matte Super Lustrous Lipstick in Smoked Peach
This is a very pretty nude lipstick. I usually wear it to weddings with a smokey eye but looks great on it’s own as well. The finish is slightly matte but the texture is pretty creamy. It’s one downfall is that it doesn’t last as long as the other Revlon and tends to feather a bit even if used with a lip primer. Still a great nude shade that can be worn day or night.

MAC Amplified Lipstick in Vegas Volt
A pink toned peach colour. Looks great on olive- dark skin, not sure about pale. It’s quite Spring/Summery, I wore it on holiday a lot. Again can be worn day or night, I prefer it as a day shade for me. Very creamy, not super long lasting but not doesn’t rub off at the drop of a hat either. Looks great with a slightly shimmery, glowing face. It’s pretty fab.

Oh Make Me Overrrrrr (ba-num ba-num ba-num)

Hey hey,

Today I’m going to wax lyrical about my everyday make up routine and products.

I start by moisturising my face with an Olay day cream with SPF but I can’t remember the exact name because my Superdrug had run out las time I went to buy it. At the mo. I’m using Olay Essentials Double Action day cream in normal/dry but it don’t gots SPF. boo.

Then I use one of the foundations that I rotate (see past post- Laying the Foundations.) If I’m in a hurry or can’t be arsed I’ll rub it in with my hands. Otherwise I’ll use a Real Techniques buffing brush (loooooove Real Techniques brushes.)

At the moment I’m a bit more tanned than usual so next I use a Real Techniques stippling brush to buff in a bit of bronzer so my face matches the rest of me and I don’t end up looking like Ghostface Killah… Yes, he’s black so that reference doesn’t work at all but I really wanted to say ghost face and then it felt weird not having Killah afterwards and…

Then I finish off with a dusting off loose powder to set everything and stop myself getting greasy eye lids (eurghh) which stop my eyeliner from doing that annoying transfer thing onto the upper lid. I’m using Collection Sheer Loose Powder in ‘Barely There’. I use a… you guessed it, Real Techniques powder brush.

For blusher I either use MAC Cremeblend blush in ‘Posey’ which I push into the skin using a small blusher brush or sometimes just use my fingers. Or MAC Powder Blush in Melba, using a MAC 150 brush (I think, the numbers rubbed off…) If I’m feeling fancy I’ll dust a little MAC Archie’s Gals Pearlmatte Face Powder in ‘Flatter Me’ on my cheekbones and bridge of nose to subtly highlight that shizz. I use a REALLY old Mister Mascara blusher brush.

I usually wear eyeliner on the top lid, unless I’m not really doing anything major or I want to look super natural. For a going out look I use MAC Black Track and wing it out with a thin eye liner brush. For more of a daytime look I’ll just use an eye liner pencil and not wing it out, currently using Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in Black (doi). I’ve just looked at it and it re-he-heally needs sharpening.

Then mascara. Up until, literally the other day I always used Max Factor False Lash Effect in Black which gives a lot of volume and adds a bit of length. I fancied a change for some reason so I bought Loreal Voluminous which I think is quite old but I wanted to try one with an actual bristly brush. The Max factor one has one of those spikey brushes and it’s quite fat so it’s hard to get in the corners and do the lower lashes without making a mess. And no one likes mess.

If I’m wearing eye liner I’ll fill my brows in with MAC Eye Brow crayon in ‘Stud’. I don’t fill in my brows if I’m not wearing eye liner because it looks kind of weird.

If I’m wearing lipstick I start with MAC Prep + Prime Lip, wait for it to sink in a bit, apply lippie, blot, re- apply.

Wham Bam thank you fam.
